Christchuch Crumbled

Christchurch. We are speechless.

Being from California, I’ve been in earthquakes before. I’ve seen some damage, but never anything that could compare to what we witnessed today. Christchurch is still a distaster zone. The downtown core remains completely closed, with the boundary guarded by the police and military.

We walked around the outskirts, trying to picture what this city was like before. But even in these areas- the areas open to the general public- destruction is everywhere. Silty holes and cracks run all over the sidewalks and streets where liquifaction occurred. Vacant lots where buildings once stood now are nothing but piles of brick and insulation. Some businesses have wood beams propping up walls and signs indicating where they have relocated, if at all. The destruction is heartbreaking, and we can only imagine what it must be like to live here.

Christchurch has a long road ahead, and our hearts are with the people who call this city home.
