New Years Day in Big Sur

My 7 years in Portland has been tangled by a not-so-secret long distance love affair. Ever since photographs of the Post Ranch Inn came across my inbox, i’ve harbored an obsession with Big Sur– often contemplating my escape into her arms while working away in my cubicle.  A visit on New Years Day seemed appropriate to bring in 2011 on the perfect note.

While the Post Ranch is far more pricey than our backpacker budget could afford, an ocean view is still free for hikers willing to climb the hills of Garrapata State Park. And what a view it is.  A steep climb with a sweeping ocean view eventually drops into a forest of redwoods, and later a valley covered in cactus.  And for January, we got lucky with fantastic, sunny weather.  The hike was absolutely breathtaking and the photos just don’t do it justice.

The day did nothing more than solidify my feelings for this part of the world.  There is no doubt in my mind that we will come back here many more times in this life, for no better reason than to feel the pure freedom this stretch of coast imparts upon it’s visitors.  Metaphorically speaking it was the perfect way to bring in the new year.  If the next 12 months follow suit, we are certainly in for an incredible adventure.
